Dogs have 5 mammary glands. About 60-70% of mammary tumors occur in the 4th and 5th glands, which are towards the rear legs. They can be single or multiple tumors, benign or malignant.

Benign tumors are usually small, firm and well defined. They do not attach to underlying tissue and are slow growing.

Malignant tumors are characterised by ulceration, swelling, attachment to skin or underlying tissue and rapid growth.

Other signs to look out for:
– loss of appetite
– weight loss
– pain
– weakness
– increased thirst & frequent urination
– breathing difficulty
– coughing
– decreased activity
