What Are IP6 & Inositol?
Inositol is a simple hexa-carbon carbohydrate derived from glucose. It is a member of B complex vitamins. When all of its six carbons are attached to phosphate groups, it is known as inositol hexaphosphate (IP6).
Inositol Hexaphosphate (IP6) is present in plant and mammalian cells. It is found in the high concentrations (0.4-6.4%) in high fibre foods such as legumes, beans, seeds, wheat bran/germ, whole kernel corn, brown rice and soy. The richest sources of IP6 are flaxseed and wheat bran. In mammals, the brain tissue has the highest levels of IP6 where it serves as a neurotransmitter. IP6 plays an important role in regulating vital cellular functions.
Inositol itself has moderate anti-cancer properties. The anti-cancer effect of IP6 is enhanced with the addition of inositol. The combination of IP6 and inositol was shown to be significantly better in different cancers than was either one alone.
IP6 For Dogs With Cancer
Numerous studies have shown the great potential of IP6 and inositol in preventing and treating cancer. Here are the different mechanisms involved in the anticancer activity of IP6 and inositol…
Anti-Cancer Action Of IP6 & Inositol
1. Potent Antioxidant
Carcinogens may exert their effect by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydroxyl radical during their metabolism. Oxidative damage to cellular DNA increases cell susceptibility to mutation and can lead to cancer.
IP6 is a natural antioxidant that suppresses hydroxyl radical formation. Therefore, it can reduce carcinogenesis caused by ROS and cellular damage.
In fact, IP6 has been shown to be a more potent antioxidant than green tea!
2. Iron Chelator – Detoxification
Tumour cells depend on iron as their main growth factor. This is why iron chelators are used as anti-tumour agents in cancer treatment. Commonly used iron chelator (chemotherapy) drugs in cancer treatment are desferrioxamine, doxorubin and deferiprone. However, there are drawbacks with using these iron chelator drugs. Desferrioxamine is expensive and modestly effective. Doxorubin and deferiprone can cause severe side effects such as heart damage.
IP6 is a natural iron chelator. It selectively binds to and removes excess iron from abnormal or cancer cells without affecting normal cells. Unlike chemotherapy drugs, IP6 is non-toxic and produces no side effects.
3. Immune Enhancer
IP6 supports the immune system by augmenting the response and effectiveness of a type of white blood cell called natural killer (NK) cell. When NK cell activity is high, the incidence of cancer is lower.
Not only does NK cells target cancer cells. They also target virally infected cells and play a key role in fighting viral infections.
In addition, IP6 activates neutrophil, a type of white blood cell that is the body’s main defence against bacteria.
As a natural compound, IP6 is useful in protecting against cancer, viruses and bacteria!
4. Regulate Cell Proliferation
Unlike normal cells that divide in a controlled manner and at a limited rate, cancer cells have lost control of their mechanisms. They divide too quickly, resulting in large numbers of defective cells. IP6 can help to reduce cancer cell proliferation rate.
5. Induce Apoptosis
Apoptosis or programmed cell death is crucial for maintaining a balance between cell death and cell growth. In cancer, this balance is disturbed and disruptions in apoptotic pathways allow abnormal cells to survive. IP6 has been shown to induce apoptosis in cancer cells.
6. Inhibit Angiogenesis
Tumours rely on angiogenesis, the creation of new blood vessels, to deliver nutrients and oxygen to cancer cells for growth. So, they produce large amounts of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a cytokine that signals normal blood vessels to grow.
IP6 suppresses the growth and differentiation of endothelial cells and the secretion of VEGF from cancer cells. This inhibits angiogenesis, thereby starving cancer cells and preventing tumour growth.
7. Inhibit Metastasis
Tumour cells produce matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), substances that allow metastatic cells to break down the barriers in the blood vessel wall and enter into blood circulation.
IP6 inhibits secretion of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). This reduces cancer cell adhesion, migration and invasion.
Benefits Of IP6 As An Anti-Cancer Agent
- A natural compound with almost no toxicity even with prolonged use at high doses.
- Target malignant cells only, normal cells and tissues are unaffected.
- Interrupt several main pathways of malignancy, ie. reduce cell proliferation, induce apoptosis of malignant cells, inhibit metastasis and angiogenesis.
- Enhance anticancer efficacy and reduce side effects of chemotherapy, thereby improving quality of life.
How Much IP6 Should You Give To Your Dog (Or Cat)?
