I’m-Yunity: Mushroom Extract Increases Survival Time in Dogs with Hemangiosarcoma

Medicinal mushrooms have long been known for their medicinal properties. They contain active compounds that confer many health benefits. The compounds exert immune enhancing, anticancer, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.

A clinical study by the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (published in 2012) found that Coriolus versicolor mushroom extract increased survival times in dogs with hemangiosarcoma.

Hemangiosarcoma is a malignant tumour that develops in any tissue with blood vessels. It tends to affect the spleen. The prognosis is poor for canine hemangiosarcoma.

Longest Reported Median Survival Time With Mushroom Extract Treatment

In the study, 15 dogs with hemangiosarcoma were divided into 3 groups of 5. Each group received I’m-Yunity, a Coriolus Versicolor mushroom extract supplement in a different dose, ie. 25, 50 or 100 mg/kg/day.

It was found that some of the dogs treated with I’m-Yunity alone lived beyond a year. Before this study was conducted, the longest reported median survival time for untreated dogs with splenic hemangiosarcoma was 86 days. Dogs in the 100mg/kg/day dose group had the longest median survival times reported to date, at 199 days. This was longer than survival time (141 to 179 days) reported for dogs receiving doxorubicin-based chemotherapeutic protocol.

The study findings suggest that I’m-Yunity was effective in fighting tumours. There are further trials of I’m-Yunity in dogs with hemangiosarcoma to confirm these results. If proven to work in the long term, treatment with I’m-Yunity can potentially extend a dog’s life and provides owners with increased quality of time with their pet.

“These promising findings offer hope that the compound may one day offer cancer patients — human and canine alike — a viable alternative or complementary treatment to traditional chemotherapies.”

What is I’m-Yunity?

I’m-Yunity is an extract derived from Coriolus versicolor mushroom (also known as cloud mushroom, turkey tail or Yunzhi mushroom). Coriolus versicolor is the most extensively researched medicinal mushroom with promising immunotherapeutic values. The primary bioactive ingredient is polysaccharo-peptide or polysaccharide peptide or PSP.

Double-blind trials in China showed that PSP significantly extended 5-year survival in oesophagal cancer. PSP also significantly improved quality of life, provided substantial pain relief, and enhanced immune status in 70-97% of patients with cancers of the stomach, oesophagus, lung, ovary, and cervix. PSP stimulated immune cell production, alleviated chemotherapy symptoms, and enhanced tumour infiltration by dendritic and cytotoxic T-cells. In Japan and China, Coriolus versicolor mushroom extract is widely used as an adjunct to standard conventional cancer treatment.

Please note that there are various brands of mushroom extract with different amounts of PSP’s. The PSP’s could be derived from other mushroom species. I’m-Yunity is a specific brand of Coriolus versicolor mushroom extract that is  standardized with  polysaccharo-peptide (PSP):

  • Polysaccharide content not less than 38%
  • Peptide content not less than 11.5%

I’m-Yunity is clinically tested and manufactured in the USA according to good manufacturing practice (GMP) standards.

Properties of I’m-Yunity (PSP)

Studies have shown that I’m-Yunity (PSP):

  • enhances immune function
  • modulates cellular responses to external challenges
  • exerts antitumour effects

The antitumour effects of I’m-Yunity include inhibition of cell proliferation and induction of apoptosis in malignant cells.

Side Effects of I’m-Yunity

There have been no reported side effects from I’m-Yunity. Since I’m-Yunity supports and maintains a healthy immune system, it should not be given to dogs

  • on any medications that suppress the immune system, or
  • that have an autoimmune disease

Avoid giving this supplement to your dog if it has a mushroom allergy.
